As women, we take care of hair, our skin and even our nails. How many of us think about taking care of our heart everyday as well? Did you know that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the United States. If you have read the Giving Back portion of my blog, then you may know that the heart is something that I am pretty passionate about. My daughter had open heart surgery to correct a defect at the age of four months.
What many people don't know, is that one week after September 11th, I lost my best friend because of heart disease. He was the best man in my wedding and the first person that I met when I moved to Georgia. We just clicked from the beginning and were always a major part of each other's lives. He was the person I called about everything and there was no one better to stand up for us in our wedding than David. David was an amazing person to be around. Seriously the life of the party and the guy who honestly never met a stranger. His enthusiasm for life was contagious. However, David was born with congenital heart failure and had always had to manage himself carefully. During the last year of his life, he stopped taking care of himself and stopped watching what he ate. He had heart attack one week after September 11th and my life has never been the same without him.
Sara Lee is partnering with The Heart Truth Campaign to raise awareness of heart disease among women and encourage them to make heart healthy food choices every day. One of the best things a mom can do for her family is to take care of herself! Sara Lee Fresh Bakery knows the first step to a healthy heart is maintaining a healthy weight and getting the nutrition women need in order to live a strong life and care for their families. This is something that we can and all should do for ourselves AND for our families.
To support the campaign, Sara Lee Fresh Bakery is offering heart healthy sandwich recipes in the WomenHeart’s ALL HEART Family Cookbook and will contribute one dollar for every cookbook ordered up to $35,000 to the National Coalition for Women with Heart Disease.
There are 175 recipes in the cookbook which includes the full spectrum of basic foods including:
