Where Food Comes From

Have you ever thought about where your food comes from? This morning we had some cheese curd delivered to our house. My husband is opening a restaurant here in Atlanta and we are making cheese for it so until it opens we are experimenting with different types of cheeses. When the guy brought the cheese curd, he even told us the name of the cow they milked the day before. It doesn't get much more farm-to-table than that. We hope that this Where Food Comes From post inspires you.

But the thing is, I am not sure that I know where most of our food comes from. I try to be conscious of it. I ask some questions if there is someone around to answer but I find that my family heads more and more to the local farmers market to get food simply because we get to meet the people growing it.

Americans have a lot of questions about how food is grown and raised, the impact on our health and the health of our planet. They want to know “Is the food we’re eating healthy long-term?” and “Is the planet able to sustain the amount of food we’re producing?” In 2010, America’s farmers and ranchers founded the U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance (USFRA) to start and lead an honest dialogue about American agriculture. USFRA has set the table for conversations with Americans to answer their questions about food and food production.

U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance (USFRA) wants to get YOU involved! Through your blog post, share your thoughts, concerns, questions, opinions and stories about American agriculture.  Please lend your voice to the conversation!  USFRA has many helpful resources available online – from short videos that answer questions about how food is grown and raised to in-depth blog posts about key issues.

I am glad that there is a place to go to get some of my questions answered. But more than that, I am glad to know that USFRA created this place with consumers in mind. And that curd we got (pictured above)? It made the most delicious, mild, freshest-tasting mozzarella cheese that I have ever had.

Luckily living in a farming state I am pretty well informed- I did like their article about the debate about arsenic in chicken and them pointing out that arsenic is present in soil and water naturally is why it shows up.
I have been to their website a number of times and am glad to see them weighing in on all ag products and informing people what is and isn’t true.

I search the internet, its amazing what I find and I have informed friends and community support (involved with farmers market, neighborhood association)

  4. The site is interesting – it is backed by big ag, but seems to try to indicate otherwise in some of the content – I think it will be interesting to see how the discussions on there go.

I read some discussions on the food dialogues site about a rancher’s view on cow/calf operations. He was saying how a rancher must have a “firm grasp of soils, forages, plant biology, nutrition, genetics, reproduction, economics, herbicide residuals, clean water, riparian zones, wildlife, timber.” All things that “makes up their individual micro-climates.” It was really interesting to me the different levels of knowledge a farmer, or in this case a rancher, needs to have. It also made me realize that the business side most likely dominates and might overtake the safety checks and balances process.
    Neat stuff.

It’s hard to know who to ask about our food. That’s why I prefer to buy local whenever possible so I can talk with the farmers if I have questions.
