UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation is Accepting Medical Grants
Years ago, I had child #3. What I did not know what that she had a heart condition. We found out a few days after she was born and she was to have open heart surgery when her body became stronger.
At the age of four months old, my daughter had that surgery to repair the hole in her heart. It was a very hard time for my family. Emotionally. Physically. But most of all financially. We had to pay 20% and you don't even want to know what that was. We are still making payments today. I really wish that there had been a place for us to turn for help.
But now there is help! The UnitedHealthcare Children’s Foundation (UHCCF) is seeking grant applications from families in need of financial assistance to help pay for their child’s health care treatments, services or equipment not covered, or not fully covered, by their commercial health insurance plan.
ABOUT THE UNITEDHEALTHCARE CHILDREN'S FOUNDATION
The UnitedHealthcare Children's Foundation is a non-profit Section 501(c)(3) charity funded by contributions from UnitedHealth Group, UnitedHealthcare and its employees, as well as the generosity of individuals and corporations.
The Foundation embraces and supports the concept of facilitating access to health-related services that have the potential to significantly enhance either the clinical condition or the quality of life of the child and that are not fully covered by the available commercial health benefit plan. The Foundation provides financial assistance toward the family's share of the cost of medical services.
In 2012, UHCCF awarded more than 1,300 grants, worth more than $4.1 million, to families across the United States for treatments associated with medical conditions such as cancer, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, diabetes, hearing loss, autism, cystic fibrosis, Down syndrome, ADHD and cerebral palsy. As successful fund-raising efforts continue to grow, UHCCF is hoping to help more children and families in 2013.
WHAT IS COVERED?
Qualifying families can receive up to $5,000 per grant to help pay for medical services and equipment such as
- Physical, occupational and speech therapy
- Counseling services
- Surgeries
- Prescriptions
- Wheelchairs
- Orthotics
- Eyeglasses
- Hearing aids
DOES YOUR FAMILY QUALIFY?
Although UnitedHealthcare Children's Foundation grant applications are being accepted ongoing, here are some guidelines for knowing if your family is eligible:
- Child with the medical condition must be 16 years old or younger
- Families must meet certain economic guidelines
- Families must reside in the United States and have a commercial health insurance plan.
Parents or legal guardians may apply for grants at www.uhccf.org, and there is no application deadline. Organizations or private donors can make tax-deductible donations to UHCCF at www.uhccf.org. Donations are used for grants to help children and families in the region in which they are received.
