Elmer’s Glue & Bagging it Forward
My family got an amazing opportunity recently courtesy of Elmer's and Collective Bias. We were given $100 to shop for school supplies. Check out the Elmer's website. Follow Elmer's on Twitter. Like Elmer's on...
Reading is a huge part of my life. HUGE. I have been reading since the age of three and have not stopped since. Or when I do stop it is only to write something.
Raising avid readers is another story altogether for me. See those three kids above? They like to read but I really want them to LOVE to read as much as I do. This is something that I have struggled with as a parent for years. What can I do to get my kids to read more? I often ask myself this as I figure out what exactly we are going to be doing during the summer each year.
The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is a free online program designed to motivate and excite your kids around reading books this summer. Kids can log the minutes they spend reading, play games, earn virtual rewards, and enter sweepstakes, all in an effort to set a new reading world record for summer 2015!
This year’s challenge theme is “Power Up & Read,” encouraging kids to read all summer long and unlock 12 original short stories by bestselling children’s authors as kids reach reading milestones. Scholastic has joined together with ENERGIZER® to power the Summer Reading Challenge and encourage families to find innovative ways to discover the power and joy of reading. Parents can sign up kids beginning May 4, 2015 and runs through September 4, 2015.
Did you know that 70% of kids want books that will make them laugh? I had no idea until I read this on the Scholastic website. I asked my kids and yes, this is true.
I have lofty goals for my family this summer when it comes to reading. First, each kid gets a Summer Reading Challenge Reading Log:
Letting my kids keep track of their reading hours is important to them. They like having these logs and recording their progress. Each kids also gets to pick 5 books from the Scholastic reading list for their age:
Once they read their five books, they get to get five more. We buy them, trade with friends and visit our local library. Doing these two things helps keep my kids motivated.
Energizer® and Scholastic are partnering to create the “Power the Possibilities” campaign which gives moms the tools they need to unlock their child’s talents, fuel their ambitions and set them up for future success. Starting May 4, 2015, parents can buy any specially marked pack of Energizer® brand batteries to scratch for a chance to win one of thousands of prizes that will power discovery and learning.
Prizes include a family trip to New York City, a Scholastic Study Corner Makeover, a tablet with Scholastic apps, a library of Scholastic books and more! Everyone who plays can also download free digital stories for their family.

That is awesome. I love keeping my kids reading over the summer. I don’t want their brains to rot away.
Sounds like a fun way to keep the kiddos motivated! As for my household I can’t get them to stop reading! Always looking for more books to keep up with as fast as they are reading them!
I miss the days when my kids could be in summer reading clubs! Now they’re too old! My daughter still reads a lot, but my son would rather play his guitar. This is a great program. I love that they have a suggested list too.
As a reading specialist, I am a strong advocate of any and all reading programs. Scholastic’s program is without question always the best!
This sounds like a wonderful summer challenge for kids to take on. I love how they do this each year.
This is a great challenge, having them keep up reading is important. It helps them learn new words and remember lots.
I love this, my fifth grader is an avid reader. I allow him to select books that will make him laugh (he is really into comics) but I also make him select chapter books. I want to make sure he is reading a solid amount of content. He has been doing the Scholastic Readers during the school year as homework/classwork. This is perfect to take into the summer. Thanks for sharing.
It’s a great program to educate kids and encourage them to read. I love that it’s free so everyone can join without much hesitation.
That’s a great reading list. I know my son absolutely loves books that make him last, but I didn’t realize that’s what kids like most with books. Good to know 🙂
We love reading challenges at our house! Love this idea! I am big into keeping our kids reading in the summer time. It’s so important to keep their skills up in the summer time. What a great program!

I love the “Power Up and Read” slogan! As an avid reader who learned to love reading at an early age, I think it’s so important to introduce kids to reading and to have fun books around that make them laugh. What a fun summer reading program!
