My first job out of college was writing computer based training programs. This wasn't an easy job and in fact, I failed miserably at it. However what I did discover is that I was pretty good at writing. All of the groups came to me to rewrite their text to make it sound better for the students who would be taking the training programs. I was at this job for over a year before I left to take a position with a lot more writing and something perfect fit to my skillset.
I have shared this story with my kids because I want them to understand that failure is a part of life. It is what you do after you fail, that really determines who you are as a person. We teach our children that it is ok to fail. That failure means learning and that you also learn a lot about yourself when you fail. Failure is not an easy thing. Failure also provides teaching opportunity and an amazing way to learn how to do things even better the next time around.
We were thrilled to try out GoldieBlox and in fact my girls have played with the toys every single day since they arrived.
GoldieBlox is a toy company out to inspire the next generation of female engineers. Construction toys help kids develop spatial skills and get them interested in math and science. For decades its been a boy’s club…until now. GoldieBlox is an interactive books + construction toys starring Goldie, a kid inventor who solves problems by building simple machines.
GoldieBlox is a series of interactive books + construction toys starring Goldie, a curious girl with a love of engineering. Goldie’s stories encourage girls to build, developing the spatial skills that are fundamental to engineering. As she goes on adventures with her friends, she comes across problems that she solves by building simple machines. While the story unfolds, girls get to build what Goldie builds.
GoldieBlox will nurture a generation of girls who are more confident, courageous and tech-savvy, giving them a real opportunity to contribute to the progress made by engineers in our society.
Did you know that the effectiveness of GoldieBlox isn’t based on assumption? They spent a year researching gender differences, talking with Harvard neuroscientists, and observing children’s play patterns. GoldieBlox stories leverage girls’ advanced verbal skills to help develop and build self-confidence in their spatial skills.

What a cool thing for little girls. I have a couple of nieces that would love this.
This is such a neat idea. I would have loved to have something like this when I was little. I would always steal my brothers toys.
What an awesome product! I love that it encourages and motivates our young girls to explore engineering skills, which is definitely not something most girls’ toys are targeting. Thanks so much for sharing this awesome product, I will definitely be getting my little girl this ASAP 🙂
Wow that’s a neat box! I haven’t heard of this before! My girlies would even love this! Will have to check it out!
I love to see toys for girls that empower them and encourage them to be the little girls they are. This is a super cute set.
That looks like a fun game for girls. I miss the times when my kids are into this kind of games.
years ago I dropped out of college.
now i am trying to go back.
This sounds really awesome for young girls, I totally support this!
I declined a speaking engagement due to fear and regretted it. The next time I was asked I decided to say yes and push through the fear….it went well and I was proud of myself.
I love how educational kids’ toys have become! My niece will get this for Christmas!
Empowerment at an early age is so important for our little ones to start getting accustom to. I wish things like this would of been around for my generation.
I love that there is something geared toward girls that encourages science and engineering-related play. So many girls would really excel in these fields as adults if they were encouraged to play as a child.
Beyond cool. We have encouraged our daughter to be a bit of a tomboy, even though she likes her pretty stuff as well. From something as simple as a set of locking blocks to a more complex toy like this, once they are hooked, it’s a lifetime thing.
GoldieBlox is awesome – I actually want one for myself. It is one of the coolest toys I’ve seen. I love that while it looks girlie, it’s still educational and at the same it encourages little girls to love science. I agree that this could help nurture younger girls to be more empowered and tech-savvy.
When I was young, I failed many times at bread baking but now I’m a whiz at it.
I’d love to get this for my ASD daughter. I think it would go a long way in helping her with her fine motor skills.
This is such a great idea. My daughter would have loved this when she was younger.
What a great gift for young girls! It would be perfect for my niece.
I love this idea and may purchase it for a friend’s birthday coming up in a few weeks. I love that GoldieBlox is tailored specifically to girls!
Young girls are so easily influenced so it is about time we have companies willing to express positivity and encouragement. I know my daughters would enjoy something like this and I definitely approve!
GoldieBlocks are so great. I love anything that gets kids interested in STEM fields.
I think this is a fabulous box for girls. I think it would really give them a self esteem boost being able to create something so neat all on their own!
How cool is that? Not only do the girls have fun, but they learn stuff, too!
My daughter would probably have loved something like this when she was younger! It looks like a lot of fun!
this so awesome
This is so cute for girls. I always need gifts for my nieces and this would be perfect, they love to create!
Determination to give 100% helped me with failure in studying once
Kiddo would love this. I dont usually enter contests, but I am going to enter this one for her.
When I went to college the first time, about a year after high school, I did not do well at all. I struggled. I had a hard time sitting in class and paying attention when the professor would go on and on for hours. I was placed on acedemic probation countless times until my final semester another bad grade had me sitting out. I had to stay out a semester and reapply. I never reapplied. I later found out it was likely due to having attention disorder that went undiagnosed along with my ptsd. A few years later one of the college in the state was one of the first to go online in the nation. We had correspondence courses then, where you would mail in your homework and watch videos. But this was one of the first online. I enrolled and THRIVED. I could read on my own and get help with classmates online. I did very well. Even had an opportunity to study abroad. But, things didnt work out and I ended up divorced and moving 1600 miles away.
When I landed here in MI in 2007 I had no idea what I was going to do. I went back to school in 2008 and finished my BA. Then, 6 weeks later I finished my MBA. All on the deans list and presidents honor roll. I graduated with honors.
If you don’t get it the first time, find a way that works for you and dont stop until you get where you want to be. Finishing my college education was a dream come true for me because for so long I thought I was stupid and would never be able to get through college. It was a lot of hard work, but I am that much stronger for going through it.
I failed at continuing an exercise program, and bounced back by starting yoga
GoldieBlox looks like toys for girls. Wish I had something like when I was a girl.
That looks like a fun box. I like when they have learning involved as well.
My first year of college I failed a class because i was just not prepared for the coursework. But I picked myself up, re-dedicated myself to my schoolwork and graduation from undergrad and grad school
If I hadnt failed, i wouldnt have realized that what it takes to succeed
I hadn’t heard of Goldie Blox before, but it sounds like a great product! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and pictures with us.
This would be fantastic for my friends little girls. They have birthdays coming up. I will have to get them this.
I am all for this toy!! Yes little girls should have options to aspire a potential career in engineering! I am so happy they are trying to change the standard and spark young girl’s mind with this fun toy!
I was failing in math and I studied like crazy for the final. It was a significant portion of my grade and I was able to get raise my overall grade to a B.
I think this is neat! This looks like something my youngest daughter would really enjoy.
Oh that is spectacular. Very neat for girls.
I absolutely love this company. I want to get just about every kit they have for my girls.
What can adorable set! I could see this as a great gift for my nieces, thanks for sharing they have birthdays coming up!
I love this idea! I want to get this for my cousin; she would enjoy this.
A time when I failed…not preparing for work. I always have a general plan instead of completely plotting what I want to do. I find that is when I “fail.”
I goof up everyday either putting the milk in the pantry to forgetting to put gas in the car and then being late. I tell my daughter and the kids I work with at school accidents happen and that’s ok; that’s why they are called accidents not purpusedents! I would so love to win this and donate it to the elementary school I work for!
When I became a SAHM, I had never really cooked a full meal before. When we both worked, he got home first and always did the cooking…he’s a great cook! But when I stayed home, I can’t even tell you how messed up my first couple attempts at making dinner were! Just horrible! But I kept at it, and now make meals like a pro..and get compliments often!
I failed the first time I took the exam for my professional license and then passed the 2nd time.
I applied a few times for a promotion until I got it.
I had to admit that I was not geared to do my last job; I changed career and now I do quite well where Iam. thank you
I failed at sticking to my diet but I came back by walking more.
I have failed at school went back and finished, failed at loosing the baby weight almost to my goal now. Best advice treat every day like a new chance
When I started college, I did terrible my first semester but I stayed with it and graduated.
