History of Dalgona Coffee
The frothy, delectable Dalgona coffee, with its light and airy texture, has taken the world by storm in recent years. But its journey to fame is more intriguing than you might think! Here's a glimpse into the history of this delightful beverage:
Early Origins
While the exact origins are debated, Dalgona coffee's roots likely lie in Macau during the 1990s. A former shipwright named Leong Kam Hon, after a debilitating accident, opened a coffee shop called “Wai Ting Coffee” (later renamed “Hon Kee”). He's credited with concocting the drink for a tourist couple in 1997, possibly inspired by similar whipped coffee drinks found in other parts of the world like Greece's frappe.
Rise to Fame in South Korea
The drink remained under the radar until 2004 when it gained the attention of Korean actor Jung Il-woo. During a television show called “Stars' Top Recipe at Fun-Staurant,” he tried the coffee at Hon Kee and compared its taste to the Korean honeycomb toffee candy, “dalgona.” This comparison stuck, and the drink became known as “dalgona coffee.”
The Viral Phenomenon
Fast forward to 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing measures, Dalgona coffee experienced a meteoric rise in popularity. A viral challenge on TikTok had people whipping up their versions, showcasing their creativity and patience. The calming, ASMR-like nature of the whipping process further fueled the trend.
Global Recognition
Dalgona coffee transcended borders, becoming a global phenomenon. Cafes started offering it on their menus, and home cooks experimented with different flavors and variations. The drink's versatility, with its ability to be enjoyed hot or cold, blended with milk, or enjoyed plain, further cemented its place in coffee lovers' hearts.
Today and Beyond
Though the initial hype might have subsided, Dalgona coffee remains a beloved beverage. Its simple ingredients, ease of preparation, and frothy goodness continue to win over palates worldwide. Who knows, maybe it'll even inspire future coffee creations!
