Disneyland is still closed. It was one of the last theme parks to shut down worldwide and Governor Newsom won't let them open. Although according to CEO Bob Chapek, the company has opened responsibly in every park around the world (after the WDW closing), Newsom remains unmoved. While there are financial and political motivators and at least some degree of manipulation regarding the layoff of 28,000 Disney cast members Since Disneyland shut down rides, the nuances of this epic standoff between Disney and the state of California are difficult to ascertain. While the Disneyland closing announcement wasn't a surprise, the fact that there continue to be Disneyland California park closures is confusing. So when will Disneyland reopen?
All we know is that Disneyland is ready to open, but the state government won't allow it. What's shocking is that Disney publicly announced that the California theme park would open back in July. No one understood at the time how bold a claim that was or that Disney may have been overstepping its boundaries. The original plan was to reopen on Disneyland's birthday, July 17. Even now, as attendance rises in the Florida parks across the country, “When will Disneyland castle reopen?” is still an open question.
Everybody is asking “When will Disneyland reopen?” The mere fact that it hasn't happened yet is causing a huge stir. California is the only place that hasn't allowed Disney back and people want to know why. It feels weirdly vindictive. People are even asking when does pirates of the Caribbean reopen at Disneyland. Disney is already under a lot of financial stress and they are doing what they can to put pressure on the government.
Meanwhile, a task force has been to Walt Disney World and they are currently set to finally visit Disneyland so that perhaps negotiations can begin to reopen. Using their experience from the other 10 theme parks around the globe, Disney prepared for a safe reopening and they are ready to open the gates as soon as the forced closure is lifted. But that still hasn't happened.
While Disneyland remains closed, the attendance at Walt Disney World has skyrocketed. Despite pandemic concerns, the lack of increased cases attributed to the parks has sparked confidence in anxious travelers. They may have succumbed to the allure of a nearly empty park with no wait times. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case. Walt Disney World theme parks now seem to be juggling regular attendance levels with increased COVID restrictions, even ejecting guests who don't properly wear their face coverings. Everything is evolving in Florida. So much so that Fireworks testing suggests potential reinstatement.
All we can do is wait for Governor Newsom to get feedback regarding Disneyland's preparedness and to make a decision. Internally Disney has been working with the labor unions to reach agreements and bring cast members back to work. The only thing that needs to happen is Newsom's thumbs up on a reopening. You can't even book the Disneyland Hotel. Until further notice, no date is pending. As always, check the cost of Disneyland tickets at Costco before heading to the parks when it's safe to travel again. We hope that this When Will Disneyland Reopen post inspires you. Happy travels!
