Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge
Reading is a huge part of my life. HUGE. I have been reading since the age of three and have not stopped since. Or when I do stop it is only to write something....
Did you know that handwriting boosts academic performance?
Did you know that better writers make better readers?
Many, many years ago I was in Catholic school and I had a class named penmanship during K-3 grade. Every single year, we spent time perfecting our handwriting so that it was neat and legible. We practiced both printing and cursive. That is how strongly our school felt about neat penmanship.
Do you know about the importance of handwriting and its role in helping kids reach their potential? It seems that schools no longer focus or teach kids cursive so we have made it our mission to teach them at home. BIC has joined and together they want us all to Fight for Your Write. Here are some tips to inspire kids.
1. Give the something to write about by giving writing prompts. For example:
2. Practice your signature for a passport or a bank account. Once I told my kids that they needed to get passports to travel, they began practicing their signatures.
3. Buy them all of the supplies they need to keep them writing. I always keep lots of notebooks and journals around the house for whenever inspiration strikes. I also buy them BIC® Mechanical Pencils.
BIC® Mechanical Pencils have been helping kids reach their potential for over 30 years. Because when kids write, things click! BIC Mechanical Pencils offer break-resistant leads and are perfect for students. These pencils support neat penmanship and gives precise, sharp and clean lines.
4. Make it easy. My kids love these custom handwriting sheets and ask for them a lot. You can create their signature and let them practice or just make sentences in cursive to practice. 4 Ways to Make Handwriting Fun for Children

My oldest is going into middle school, so everything will be need to be typed from here on in. My little one will still have to write, though.
This is certainly an interesting topic right now. With schools across the nation considering no longer teaching cursive handwriting, plus our dependence on word processing these days, I wonder if handwriting will eventually become obsolete altogether.
I’m so glad my grandkids learned cursive. They were taught cursive in 1st grade. I think it’s sad that handwriting is becoming obsolete. I agree with Bic that we should save handwriting.
It’s good to know some kids are still writing, LOL I thought they were all suffering from ‘text thumb’! (Anyone else remember those funny handwriting analysis things at local carnivals?)
These are such great ideas! My oldest just wants to type everything and it’s such a struggle to get him to write. I’m going to try giving him a topic and taking away his computer.
I find using my colourful pens helps a ton getting my kiddos to practice. They actually enjoy it and writing stories so I can’t complain!
Wow! I didn’t realize how important handwriting is. I love these techniques. Bic mechanical pencils were always my fav growing up.
I home school and I realized when I read this, my son does not write u ch by hand I need to change this quickly.
It’s kind of sad that we don’t hand write as much as we used to. It’s an important skill to learn.
Very interesting article. I have a 5 year old son. He loves drawing and writing with me. I love typography so much and hope my kids will learn beautiful handwriting 🙂
When BB heard schools were doing away with cursive writing she almost cried. Another point of individuality and originality being lost in the age of computers! Penmanship is an artform if done correctly, and that pledge? Let Babushka at it!!
I agree with you. Handwriting should be a skill that every child should learn. Despite the advances in technology, we should let our kids know about how nice and heartwarming it would be to receive a personal handwritten letter from a loved one.
This is a great idea for kids to practice their hand writing. I remember doing these things as a kid. Bic mechanical pencils is something my sons always wanted when they were in school. This is a great Surprise 30 th Birthday Sweepstakes. Thanks for sharing.
I love this, my son is going to the sixth grade and I’m so thankful that he likes to write. Writing in cursive is his favorite, I try to encourage him to keep at it for as long as I can.
I love this! My daughters are only 4 and 6, so they’re still learning how to write. They certainly love too though! I just hope they continue to love writing. I’ve always loved to write.
It makes me very sad that we have school in my area that are not teaching cursive handwriting any longer. I think that is very sad.
I started my kids writing in a journal when they were little. The only rule is they have to do it in handwriting. They are both in college now and still write in their journals a few times a week.
I can’t believe that handwriting may one day disappear!! I know that some kids I know don’t even know cursive. This is a great idea to make handwriting fun for kids!
I totally agree that encouraging children the importance of handwriting is crucial in education. So many kids have become accustomed to using only a computer to type and penmanship can really slip to the wayside.
What a neat handwriting your daughter has. My children’s school still practice cursive handwriting which I really liked.
I have loved watching my 4 year old learn to write. Being able to hand him a card to write in for family is the most fun for him.
Handwriting is a good way to communicate through the medium of writing. I like your article on teaching your kids to write and to become better at thinking creatively. Handwriting sheets seem like a perfect way to practice and become more effective writers.
