What you can do to make the most of a lazy weekend at home
What you can do to make the most of a lazy weekend at home Many people nowadays don’t really have lazy weekends where they just spend the whole time indoors. However, such days can...
We are avid readers in this family. However, I have to actively encourage my children to read. I print out checklists. I buy them every book they ask for and we even designate how many minutes everyone will read each week. Scholastic has teamed up with the Energizer Bunny this summer to encourage kids to read even more.
In an effort to log as many minutes as possible through the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge AND to break the world record for summer reading, Scholastic is setting special weekly goals for young readers. Every Monday we’ll be announcing a #MondayMinutesGoal, the number of minutes for kids to read together in one week (by the following Monday).
Whether your child or student is reading independently aloud or together with you, let’s share their success and keep the momentum going! Here’s how:
Now in its 9th year, the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is a free online reading program dedicated to stopping the “summer slide” by encouraging kids to read throughout the summer months when school is out. This year’s challenge theme is “Power Up & Read,” powered by ENERGIZER®.
This year’s challenge theme is “Power Up & Read,” encouraging kids to read all summer long and unlock 12 original short stories by bestselling children’s authors as kids reach reading milestones. Scholastic has joined together with ENERGIZER® to power the Summer Reading Challenge and encourage families to find innovative ways to discover the power and joy of reading. Parents can sign up kids beginning May 4, 2015 and runs through September 4, 2015.

We plan on reading 20 minutes every night!
I have no little kids left that need coached to read. I’m glad to say the older ones enjoy a good book. Beverly Cleary was a favorite author for my students when I taught elementary school. I’m always glad to see reading promotions that encourage this skill.
This sounds great. When we read its usually for 20+ minutes but it’s not every day consistently I think this is such a great idea!
This is such a great reading challenge. My son is always asking for a new book to read.
This is awesome. Love reading programs
My kids are reading 20 #MondayMinutes of Magic Tree House books right now. They actually read about that much each day.
What a great motivator to keep kids reading. I’m sure seeing the minutes add up is a big source of pride.
My kids are signed up and loving the program. It’s been good to be accountable each week.
This is a great idea. My girls start reading HARD at the start of summer and then slip! I will encourage them to at least read 30 minutes a day.
I think it’s a great idea to give kids a certain amount of time to try to strive for when reading. It’s good to have goals.
Their goal is 1000 mins each
Power Up and Read is a good slogan (for a good program). I’m glad they still have the cute bunny too, I love him. 😉
I started out doing this and then let it slip by. My children start school next week. Ughh, maybe next summer.
My daughter will plan to read at least 1/2 hour a day for her #MondayMinutes
We have 20 minutes of reading time every day.
We read 30 minutes every day!
Our plan is for #MondayMinutes 25 minutes.
