As parents, we really don't get the opportunity to be with our kids every day while they are in the classroom, do we? I have to admit that I sometimes need a little help when it comes to helping my kids with homework. Clearly, I am not smarter than a fifth grader or at least it is not as fresh in my mind as it probably is for my kids.
Homework and tests can be a source of frustration for both parents and students. Throw the Common Core in there and the chances are you might have some questions. “Be A Learning Hero gives parents information and tools that help them understand the changes in the way math and English language arts are being taught and assessed.”
Change is hard and is much harder for parents when they are directly involved in what is changing. We kind of watch from the sidelines and have to pitch in when needed but we don't really have all of the information that we need to do a good job.
There is a process involved when it comes to new homework, new tests and new standards. This is all to do what is best for students. “Setting higher standards and using better tests to see if students are reaching those goals puts students on a path to success.”
Many of us have questions about the Common Core and it is important to really understand what we can about these new standards. Talking to your child's teacher will help. You can also check out the free resources available at BeALearningHero.org. The site will “help you understand what the Common Core and new assessments are, how they will impact your child, and what you as a parent can do to help support your child's learning at each grade level.”
HELPING PARENTS UNDERSTAND
Be a Learning Hero, in partnership with the National PTA, is running a campaign to help parents better understand the Common Core and new assessments: specifically why these changes occurred, what they are, and what they mean for their children and what parents can do to help support their child's learning.
The goal of Be A Learning Hero is to provide straight answers and helpful resources to address parents' questions about the Common Core State Standards and Common Core-aligned assessments/tests like PARCC and Smarter Balanced that students are taking this year.
The amazing resources available for parents at BeaLearningHero.com includes “the best tools and resources available for the Common Core and new assessments, including videos, practice exercises, grade-by-grade tips and more.”
