From Fidgeting to Forgetfulness: Signs Your Child May Have ADHD
As parents, we often witness our children display any number of behaviors or quirks. It can often be difficult to determine whether these are something to do with development, or whether certain behaviors are caused by something else. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition that affects many children in the US.
Knowing the signs of ADHD can help in getting a diagnosis early, which means better support for your child. Below we explore the common signs of ADHD and what steps to take if you think your child has it.

Fidgeting and Restlessness
One of the hallmark traits of ADHD is excessive fidgeting and general restlessness. Children with ADHD can find it difficult to stay still or remain seated, even if they know they’ll get in ‘trouble’ for not doing so.
This is regularly seen in schools, at church, or in the cinema. You may notice your child squirming, tapping their feet, playing with anything they can get their hands on, or constantly changing their position. You may also notice that some activities cause a hyper focused state, which causes your child to be blissfully unaware of anything else, even the need to sleep, eat, or drink.
7 Ways to Support Healthy Relationships with Your Children
Poor Self-Control
Children with ADHD often have poor self-control, as they struggle to wait for their turn, interrupt during a conversation, or act without considering the consequences. This is how their brain works and is not a sign of a ‘naughty’ child, but may be a sign of a misunderstood one. This type of impulsive behavior can lead to social challenges, especially in forming relationships and doing well in school.
Luckily, there are now many ways to accommodate children with ADHD in the classroom, such as using technology for tasks, allowing extra time on tests, and extra help with staying organized.

Forgetfulness and Inattention
Children with ADHD may struggle to follow through with tasks and often appear forgetful. This can come across as failing to do homework assignments or constantly losing belongings. You may notice your child has a hard time keeping track of where they put things or may frequently switch from one activity to the next, without finishing any.
In school settings, children with ADHD can be easily distracted, have trouble listening to simple instructions, and can make careless mistakes in their work. ADHD effects on learning in the classroom can manifest in various ways, including difficulties with attention, impulsivity, and organization. Consequently, they may struggle to keep up with their peers academically and may require additional support and accommodations to succeed in the classroom. Understanding these effects is crucial for educators and parents alike to provide the necessary assistance and create a supportive learning environment for these students. ADHD is more prevalent in children who had a traumatic birth. This may not be seen until your child gets older and goes to kindergarten. Birth trauma resulting in developmental disability can be caused by medical negligence. It’s important to talk to an attorney if you believe this is the case.
If you think your child has ADHD, it’s best to make a note of any behaviors and speak to their pediatrician. A diagnosis is essential for the correct help and support, both for yourself and your child. As parents, being vigilant and proactive can make a huge difference in helping our children to thrive, no matter how their brain works.
