Did you know that right here in America, there are 16 million children struggling with hunger? That number is equal to the population of Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia and Chicago combined. That number is scary.
1 in 5 children unaware where their next meal is coming from and I bet there are kids around you that this describes. I know that there are hungry kids at the school my children attend. That is why they have a free breakfast program.
My husband grew up in a home where he didn't always have enough food. He often went to school hungry but was fed two meals a day. It was the weekends where he really struggled. My husband has told me stories of trying to find enough bottles to get the refund on every weekend just so he could buy a large pickle at the store near his house. He cut that pickle in half. He had half on Saturday and half on Sunday. That story alone makes me want to do whatever we can to help with childhood hunger in the US.
Hunger's youngest victims are often invisible in the United States, but the reality is, hunger in America has no boundaries – rural, urban and suburban – and with , one of these children could be your own neighbor or even your child's best friend. Watch the video below. The face of hunger in the US looks just like you and I do.
UNILEVER PROJECT SUNLIGHT
Unilever Project Sunlight is rallying people across the country to “Share A Meal to Help Turn the Tables on Child Hunger in America.”
Unilever Project Sunlight is an initiative focused on encouraging people to create a brighter future for children – by taking small steps to live sustainably, use less and share even more.
On October 13th Unilever premiered an original documentary, titled Going to Bed Hungry: The Changing Face of Child Hunger, which reveals the power and the promise of a shared meal for families across America.
The goal is to help raise awareness of the issue that likely impacts everyone's neighborhood and unfortunately often goes unnoticed. The program sheds light on child hunger in America and will hopefully inspire people across our nation to help.
