Did you know that healthy tuna can and should be a part of any healthy pregnancy? Once upon a time, women (including me with my first pregnancy) thought that seafood was taboo during the earlier stages of pregnancy. Many women skip tuna and in fact skip seafood altogether during pregnancy when, in fact, there are numerous studies that show eating seafood (anytime or especially while pregnant) can do many things including:
* boost the brain power of babies (the study shows that children whose mother's consumed around two ounces of fish per day actually had higher developmental scores)
* fight heart disease
* keep your mind sharp
Another recent study shows that skipping the eating of seafood during pregnancy can actually increase your risk of depression. Your best bet is to have two to three servings of fish per week during pregnancy and then to continue after.
There are some wonderful recipes for fish. Tuna fish is something that has made its way into my house lately because of cost and nutritional value. I have been experimenting with various recipes and trying to find things that my kids love. Below I have shared one of my family's favorite recipes:
Ten Minute Tuna Tacos
Ingredients:
6 ½ oz can of healthy tuna (drained and flaked)
corn or flour tortillas -try the wheat flour tortillas
1/4 cup chopped cilantro
2 tablespoons sour cream
1 teaspoon lemon juice plus ½ tsp of lemon zest
1 teaspoon olive oil
1 cup chopped tomatoes
For topping:
Salsa, shredded cheese, shredded lettuce, diced avocado, chopped green chilies
Preparation:
Mix the lemon juice, lemon zest, sour cream, cilantro, tomatoes and healthy tuna. Put olive oil in a skillet on medium heat and add mixture once the pan has gotten warm. Saute the mixture until thoroughly heated and remove from heat. Warm the tortillas.
Place about ¼ cup of the mixture into each taco shell and then add toppings. Makes 4-6 servings.

Well that’s good news to me! I’ll have to do some reading before I believe it, but I’m open to the idea that there’s some safe fish out there.
I hope so! I’m planning to get pregnant this year and fish is the only kind of animal protein I eat.

So glad to read this post. I was the same way with Graham.. avoided fish at all costs.. but I keep hearing differently now.

This fish thing is something that seems to go back & forth about eating it while pregnant- years ago of course the info really wasn’t out there, then mercury was found and now it is back again you can eat fish.
Personally I am glad it is swinging back-fish is good for you & your baby!
