Braces Then, Invisalign Now

Look at those smiles.
My children are 6, 8 & 10 and the two older ones are definitely going to need braces. In fact, they are probably ready for them right now but my husband and I are waiting for the next dentist trip to see if we get a referral to an orthodontist. The younger still hasn't lost a single tooth but if she is anything like her brother and sister, she will need braces. Braces are a rite of passage in my family!
I had braces for many years but not until my early 20's although I really needed them for most of my life. At this point, I was on my own and could afford to pay for them. We couldn't afford them when I was younger so I waited.
These are the kind of braces that I had:
Not too pretty, right? At the time, this was the most that I could afford. Unfortunately I need them again. It has been almost 20 years and now there are some spaces that shouldn't be there so I need to revisit this whole braces thing all over again.
I love the advances that have been made with regards to braces. Metal is no longer necessary and now you can wear braces without anyone knowing. I absolutely love this!
ABOUT INVISALIGN
Adults and teens now have a modern choice for straightening their teeth. No more wires and brackets required – Invisalign is the clear alternative to metal braces that uses a series of virtually invisible and removable aligners that gradually move teeth over time. The benefits include no food restrictions, ability to easily maintain healthy dental brushing habits, minimal interference with sports or other activities, and teeth get straightened without most people knowing you are in treatment. Visit the Invisalign website for more information about the clear alternative to braces.
As with any medical procedure, consider getting a second opinion if you are told you or your child is not a candidate for Invisalign. Not all dentists and orthodontists are certified Invisalign providers, the best way to find an Invisalign provider is to visit the Invisalign Doctor Locator.

METAL BRACES VS. INVISALIGN
Today’s braces are more sophisticated than ever. Gone are the days of “wrap around” metal brackets, bonded brackets and big clunky head and neck gears. As technology enhances our daily lives, it also continues to advance the science of orthodontics.
When compared to metal (or even ceramic wire & bracket) braces, a clear aligner option like Invisalign has many advantages. There are many benefits of Invisalign. Although the cost is roughly about the same as traditional braces, the Invisalign treatment usually requires fewer office visits, shorter appointments and no “emergency” visits for broken wires or brackets. Metal wires and brackets can cause irritation or even accident-‐related injuries, especially for teens involved in sports.
INFORMATION ABOUT INVISALIGN
- Among the new advances in orthodontia, removable aligners, like Invisalign & Invisalign Teen, are fast becoming a popular choice. The system uses a series of clear aligners made of lightweight plastic that sit smoothly on the teeth allowing for a more comfortable fit and they work as effectively as traditional metal braces.
- Because the aligners can be removed, kids can eat, brush and floss as they would normally. Teens can smile with confidence while straightening their teeth since this treatment, unlike traditional metal braces, is virtually invisible.
