As a new mother of a baby girl, it never occurred to me that one day I would be teaching another human being about having a period. I could have never imagined myself doing this but it just recently happened to my daughter which meant that I was having the talk right away. While it's not always an easy thing to discuss, these 9 Tips for Talking to a Girl about Her Period can help you navigate through that time of the month chat.
9 Tips for Talking to a Girl about Her First Period
- Talk about menstruation with your daughter as early as possible. As soon as she asks about anything, sit down with her and discuss the basics.
- When her first period starts, this is the time to have a more in-depth discussion
- Don't just let your daughter watch a video or give her a book to read. This doesn't really allow her to remember or ask questions. A video or a book can be a great follow up.
- Have your daughter write down any of her questions. This is the perfect place for her to write down answers as well.
- Always ask “What have you heard?” Since girls talk quite a bit, it is a good idea to find of what your daughter thinks she knows. This is a great time to dispel any myths or correct anything that is false.

These are great tips. It’s not easy talking to our daughters at such a young age about this.
Thankfully I have boys so I get to avoid this awkward topic of conversation, but it is something I have had to address with students sometimes. So many great tips!

This is great advice! I have always been very open with my kids. Having a back ground in biology, I find it is the easiest approach. It is a process the body goes through so there should be no shame. My DD is only 4 but I hope she feels comfortable enough to come to me. My DS10 already had the basic sex talk with me. I was nervous but glad he came to me!
These are really helpful tips. My younger sister is at this age, so it will be helpful to talk to her about it without making her feel awkward!

My period started on Halloween. Luckily I learned enough in health class at school to know what was going on or I would have just thought it was a Halloween curse. lol.

It’s always a good idea to help your daughter be prepared for this time in her life. I knew what it was when it happened but if I had no idea I would have flipped out!
