It is officially summer and I am thrilled because that means travel, camps, time with the kids, swimming plus so much more. This is always such a fun time for me and since the 21st was the longest day of the year, I spent some time that day planning some fun summer activities for my kids that include summer camp for all three kids plus a variety of outside programs.
Growing up, I went to Girl Scout camp every single summer. I really looked forward to it, and I always had such an amazing time. I made friends, and to this day, I still keep in touch with a few people from my childhood. My days at camp were filled with swimming lessons, hiking, biking, canoeing, rock climbing, and so much more. This was such an active and fun camp that I begged my parents to send me every summer—I never wanted to go anywhere else.
One year at camp, I was stung by a bee during a camp ceremony as we were all sitting in wooden bleachers. It hurt a lot but the scariest part was that my ankle swelled up and I became really dizzy. I was taken to the camp infirmary and then kept there for two days until the swelling went down. I had no clue what to do and I learned right after camp that one allergy tablet would have brought the swelling down in less than an hour.
Since summer also means a lot more activity and in my mind, that could potentially mean more opportunities for injuries and/or illness. As a worrying mama of three children, I want to make certain that they are also responsible for their own safety just as much as I am but even more so when they are away from home. These 5 Summer Safety Tips for Kids can help both children and adults.
The temperatures are rising and as camps begin, these are tips that my kids and I have to keep in mind to keep us all well during the summer months. We need to keep ourselves safe from sun exposure, heat, insect bites and more. Here are ways to keep everyone safe during the summer months and indeed all year round.
Staying hydrated is key year round and so we always carry water bottles with us everywhere. Last week, my son went to Boy Scout camp and a camp requirement is that you must have a water bottle at all times. That is great rule and one that we also follow in our family.
As a fair skinned woman, I always have to wear sunscreen every single day of the year. I am always protecting my skin and I tend to reapply sunscreen a lot more in the summer. Excessive sun exposure can be a big deal that can seriously impact you and your children.
We all hear the horror stories and frankly that isn't always enough but leaving anything living thing in a hot car is incredibly detrimental. It never hurts to have a reminder and to be alert any time a child might be left in the car. Learn more about hot temperatures and car safety here where these simple tips can help prevent tragic vehicular heat stroke in children, and should be kept in mind any time your child is in the vehicle with you or someone else.
Insect bites can definitely slow you down. Depending on what is doing the biting, there can also be diseases and other things that can make you sick. Knowing how to choose the right repellant is just as important as knowing what to do in case of bee sting or bug bite.
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta is where we head in case of emergency. A few months ago, my daughter hurt her finger while playing soccer and a quick trip to Children’s Urgent Care Center told us the soccer ball had badly sprained her wrist. They got us in and out of there plus my daughter was feeling so much better.

These are great tips. My kids and I all have allergies so I keep some medicine at home and in my purse. We also wear Road IDs just in case we get separated or sick and can’t speak. This is especially important for the 5 year old.
Wearing sunscreen and carrying water with you are very important for summertime. You don’t want to get sunburnt or dehydrated.
Yes! Sunscreen people!! I can think go anywhere for more than 20 minutes without 50SPf!
Summer can be tough when the kids are so active and busy, and you have the sun and heat on top of it. So important to keep sunscreened and hydrated!
Such a great post! The hot car reminder is such an important reminder. It always saddens me to read about children who died because someone thought they would be safer in a hot car, or forgot all about them. Any awareness that can be brought to this serious issue is awesome!
These are very important tips. I always make sure that we slather on sunscreen before going out the door and we always carry a bottle of water.
These are such helpful and important tips for sure. I am a HUGE sunscreen wearer year round. I always try to lather more on before leaving the house. I do however, need to get better at carrying water with me.
Great tips for summer safety that adults should even follow! I agree with all of them and make sure I do them for me and the kids, it’s very important
I have to remember the first aid kit, I always forget that. Luckily, my kids are very cautious.

I feel you – I am such a worried mother most of the days! These are awesome tips, and having water is something we often forget about, and then end up having to stop at gas stations to get it. We need a list every time we leave the house.
These are such great tips. I push water on the kids constantly, not letting them go outdoors without some. #3 is really a growing problem. There have been so many needless deaths from kids being left in cars.
We are diligent about making sure everyone has sunscreen on before going outside. Sunburns can be avoided 80% of the time.
I always cringe when I hear stories of babies, kids, or dogs being locked in the car during the summer. ;(
Great tips. Keeping plenty of water on hand at all times is very important during the hot summer months.
Great reminders. It kills me that people still think it’s OK to leave a child or a pet in a locked car with closed windows. 🙁
Sunscreen is so important. Where I live it is very hot so water is a staple item! We have to have water at all times.
I definitely like being prepared in the summer so we can have as much fun as possible. I like keeping some extra sunscreen around just in case!
We always keep a first aid kit with us. You never know when an accident is going to happen and best be prepared.
Such a good tips. Sunscreen and water is a must since my son was always thirsty when we are on outside I always need to bring water
When we went on vacation we packed pretty much all of the above. My kids were not allowed in the pool without their life vests.
The sun is the biggest enemy for my girls in the summer. Their fair Irish skin gets burned and blistered so easily, we have to be extra careful when summer rolls around.
I don’t live in Atlanta, however, I think that’s an awesome service. I am all about bringing awareness to not leaving anything or anyone in a hot car.
This what we pretty much do during the summer. The first aid kit is what we have all year round. I practically have everything in our kit, from bandages, antiseptics and burn ointment to antihistamines, cough and cold preparations, belly pain and diarrhea medications. Better safe than sorry!
These are really helpful tips! I agree with all these! It’s really important to stay hydrated. 🙂
I always bring a tumbler that’s filled with water and so do the kids when we go out. It’s good to make sure that you have water at all times! I think these are great tips, it’s important that they know where to go and who to call when something happens.
Great ideas for kid safety. Our boys are getting older and this is what they need to know.
Such great safety tips. Water is the most important thing. Some parents think that their kids drinking juice is enough to get them through a hot summer day, but you truly need water, everyone needs water.
We definitely don’t leave the house without some water in the bag. Everybody has their own refillable bottles and we carry them everywhere. As much as we sweat in the heat, we have to rehydrate often.

Girl Scout camp was always a great time. I have so many wonderful memories from those years. I always keep a first aid kit in the car for when we are on the road. Sunscreen is a must.
I always forget To pack big spray and it is so important! We went to a baseball game outdoors yesterday and i luckily remembered !
I pack a mean first aid kit. I have one in the car, two at home, and one in my purse. Its got everything we could possibly need in an emergency. This summer, we’ll be taking the grandkids on hiking and swimming trips so we’ve got a lot of sunscreen and insect repellent spray with us too.
Kids are so active that water is essential. So much easier to get dehydrated during the summer.
So many great tips! It can get so hot in the summer that keeping water on hand is crucial. They can get heat stroke so quickly.
